
A: Mitten Challenge
- The Orangeville Agricultural Society challenges all fairgoers to knit mittens in either children or adult sizes.
- All entries will be donated to local community services for distribution for those in need.
- You may use the following pattern or your own pattern.
- You may also enter as many as you wish, however, only 1 pair may be submitted to be judged for competition.

Mittens:
These instructions are written for child's size. Any changes necessary for lady's sizes (L) and man's size (M) are written in brackets thus: ( ).
Materials:
Knitting Worsted Yarn - 1 ball, (L - 2 balls), (M - 3 balls) 4mm knitting needles.
Right Mitt:
- Cast on 32 sts (L- 40 sts), (M - 44 sts) and work 2" (L – 3"), (M - 3 1/2") in (Kl, Pl) ribbing.
- Work 6 rows (L- 8 rows), (M - 10 rows) even in stocking st, ending with purl row.
To make Thumb Gusset:
- lst row: K17 (L-K21), (M - K23). Inc 1 st. in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of row.
- 2nd and alternate rows: Purl
- 3rd row: K 17 (L-K21), (M-K23). Inc 1 st in next st. K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of row.
- 5th row: K17 (L- K21), (M - K23). Inc 1 st in next st. K4. INc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of row.
- 6th tow: Purl
- Continue increasing in this manner, that is, having 2 sts more between increases on next and every alternate row to 40 sts on needle (L - 52 sts), (M - 56 sts)
- Next row: Purl
To make Thumb: K 27 (L - K35) (M - K37).
- Turn. Cast on 1 st. P 10 (L and M - P 14) including cast on st.Turn. Cast on 1 st.
- Working on these 11 sts (L and M - 15 sts) continue even in stocking st for 1 3/4" (L - 2 1/4") (M - 2 1/2") or desired length, ending with purl row.
- Next row: Kl * K2tog. Repeat from * to end of row. Break yarn. Thread end through remaining sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew thumb seam.
- To make remainder of mitt: With right side of work facing, join yarn to last st on right hand needle. Pick up and knit 2 sts at base of thumb.
Knit across sts on left hand needle.
- Next row: Purl, purling together the 2 sts picked up at base of thumb. 32 sts on needle (L-40 sts) (M - 44 sts)
- Continue even in stocking st until work from top of ribbing measures 4 1/2 " (L - 5 1/12"), (M - 6 1/4") or desired length, ending with purl row.
To Shape top:
- 1st row: K1 S11 K1 psso K10 (L-K14)(M-K16). K2tog. K2. SI 1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. Kl.
- 2nd and alternate rows: purl
- 3rd row: Kl. Sl 1. Kl. psso. K8 (L- K12) (M - K14). K2tog. K2. SI 1K2. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2 tog. Kl.
- 5th row: K1. Sl 1. Kl. psso. K6 (L-K10) (M-K12). K2tog. K2. Sl 1. Kl. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. Kl.
- Continue decreasing in this manner, every alternate row to 16 sts. on needle. Cast off purlways. Sew top and side seams.
Left Mitt:
- Work from ** to ** as given for right mitt.
To make thumb gusset:
- 1st row: K12 (L - K16) (M - K18). Inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts. Knit to end of row.
- 2nd and alternate rows: Purl
- 3rd row: K12 (L - K16) (M - K18). Inc 1 st in next st. K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end or row.
- 5th row: K 12 (L - K16) (M - K18). Inc 1 st in next st. K4. Inc 1 st in next st. Knit to end of row.
- 6th row: Purl.
- Continue increasing in this manner, that is having 2 sts more between increases on next and every alternate row to 40 sts on needle
(L - 52 sts) (M 56 sts).
- Next row: purl
To make thumb: K22 (L - K30) (M - K32).
- Turn. Cast on 1 st. P 10 (L and M - P 14) including cast-on st. Turn. Cast on 1 st.
- Working on these 11 sts. (L and M - 15 sts) complete thumb and remainder of mitt as given for right mitt.
B: Incubator Quilt Challenge
The Orangeville Agricultural Society challenges all fair exhibitors to create incubator quilts for infants at the local hospital.
You may enter as many as you wish.
All entries will be donated to Headwaters Health Care Centre.
You may make as many as you wish, however, only one will be judged for the competition.
Please use the following guidelines in creating these quilts: Approx. size: 28” x 30”
Colour: Bright, cheerful children’s prints & plains
Fabric: Cotton and/or flannelette
They may be hand or machine quilted
Prizes: 1st: $10.00 2nd: $7.00 3rd: $5.00
